Bitter melons are also called bitter gourds and they are very healthy vegetables. The shape of a bitter melon is like a cucumber except that it has gourd-like bumps on it. As the name suggests, it has a bitter taste to it and it has 2 varieties: one is small that grows to about 10 cm or less and the other variety grows to about 20 cm. The former is oval and dark green in color whereas the latter is oblong and its color is pale green. Bitter melons are very rich in iron as they have double the amount of beta carotene of a broccoli, double the amount of potassium of bananas, double the amount of calcium of spinach, and not to forget it contains Vitamins B1 to B3, A, C, good dietary fiber and Phosphorous.
