There are a number of reasons or factors which may increase the risk for development of osteoporosis in women. For betterment of womens health, it is essential to consider various causes in order to build awareness among people. Following are some of the major causes which increase the risk:

Unchangeable factors

There are some of the risk factors which cannot be under control, such are:
  • Sex- As compared to men, women are more likely or prone to develop osteoporosis.
  • Age- With an increase in age, the chances and risks of osteoporosis also increase.
  • Race- There are higher risks of osteoporosis in white and Asian descent people.
  • Family history- Having a sibling or a parent who has osteoporosis increases the risk in other children and siblings as well. Such a risk is specifically more enhanced if there is family history of fractures of hip.
  • Frame size- People with small body frames are likely to be at higher risks of developing osteoporosis because they might have lesser bone mass which can be drawn from as their age increases.

Hormone levels

It is observed that excess or deficiency of certain hormones also become factors that lead to osteoporosis in certain people. Such factors can be:
  • Sex hormones- Reduction of estrogen at menopause is the strongest factor for development of osteoporosis. Women may experience such a drop in the estrogen levels during certain treatments for cancer also. Men experience gradual reduction in the testosterone levels with increase in age. Also, some of the prostate cancer treatments reduce levels of testosterone in men. Sex hormone levels, when lowered, tend to weaken the bones.
  • Thyroid problems- Bone loss can be caused by too much of thyroid hormone. It occurs if there is too much of thyroid hormone medication taken or the thyroid is overactive.
  • Other glands- Adrenal glands and overactive parathyroid are also associated with development of osteoporosis.

Dietary Factors

Certain dietary factors, as the following, are more likely to aid in development of osteoporosis:
  • Low calcium intake
  • Eating disorders
  • Gastrointestinal surgery

Steroids and Other Medication

Long-termed use of the corticosteroid medications and addiction of prescribed medications interferes with bon-rebuilding process. It is found that osteoporosis is associated with the medications used for preventing or combating:
  • Seizures
  • Depression
  • Cancer
  • Gastric reflux
  • Transplant rejection

Lifestyle Choices

Certain bad habits and lifestyle choices may increase the risk of osteoporosis. Such may include:
  • Sedentary lifestyle- People who tend to spend most of their time sitting are at the higher risk of developing osteoporosis than those who are physically active. Exercises like running, dancing, jumping and walking are helpful in building healthy bones. While weight-bearing exercises are particularly more beneficial for bones.   • Excessive alcohol consumption- Having 2 alcoholic drinks per day or regular consumption of alcohol increases the risk of osteoporosis in women. It is because the alcohol has the ability to interfere with body's ability by which it absorbs calcium.
  • Tobacco- Until recently, the exact role of tobacco in developing osteoporosis is not clearly understood, but according to the researchers, it is an established fact that tobacco consumption weakens the bones.
