Mental Health and Physical Health

Physical and mental health goes hand in hands. Sometimes your physical health affects your mental health and sometimes your mental health affects your physical health. Many researches and studies have proved that your mental health affects your physical health more, as compared to physical health’s affect on your mental health. Eating Disorders

Eating disorder refers to an unhealthy condition where an individual suffers from unhealthy or abnormal eating habits. People suffering from eating disorders either consume insufficient amount of food, or consume excessive food. In both the case, insufficient and excessive food intake can cause harm to your physical health. Some of the side effects caused by the eating disorders are: -
  • Over-eating or under-eating can cause Malnutrition. Malnutrition refers to the deficiency for energy, micronutrients and protein (for example iodine, vitamin A and iron). Deficiency of these things can also occur in combination. Malnutrition can cause kidney failure, respiratory infections, heart attack and blindness and in some serious cases death.
  • A person who suffers from eating disorders often complains about Dehydration. An individual suffering from an eating disorder may consume insufficient amount of fluid. This can cause dehydration. An individual may suffer weakness, dizziness and might notice darkening of urine. These all are symptoms of dehydration. Dehydration can also cause heart failure, kidney failure, brain damage and seizures.
  • In eating disorder, an individual might consume water or fluid more than his body’s need. This can lead to Hyponatremia. Hyponatremia refers to the condition where there is inefficient sodium in blood. Hyponatremia is very dangerous for people who are already dehydrated or malnourished. Hyponatremia can cause brain to swell, fluid in lungs, confusion, vomiting or even death.
  • Excessive water consumption by people suffering from an eating disorder may notice swelling in their feet, legs or in abdominal area. This condition is known as Edema. Edema is the swelling of soft tissues of the body, usually caused by the excessive water consumption.
  • Consumption on insufficient amount of food can cause dehydration or malnutrition, which can lead to Hypotension or low blood pressure. This condition should be treated right away as this condition can also lead to myocardial infarction or heart arrhythmias.
  • Consumption of insufficient fluids and foods can cause vitamin deficiency. Vitamin deficiency can harm your body’ power or ability to heal on its own. Decline in body’s power or ability to heal on its own, low platelets count, low blood pressure and extreme weight loss can make your skin very sensitive, causing it to be easily bruised.
